Effect of temperature and water activity on growth and ochratoxin A production boundaries of two Aspergillus carbonarius isolates on a simulated grape juice medium.

This paper reports on the use of a logistic regression model for predicting growth and ochratoxin A production by Aspergillus carbonarius in a synthetic grape juice medium. It was found that the model accurately predicted mould growth and ochratoxin production at a variety of temperatures. The authors propose that the model is suitable for predicting the risk of contamination of grapes and grape products by Aspergillus carbonarius.Tassou C.C. Natskoulis P.I. Magan N. Panagou E.Z. Mycotoxins: Keeping the grain trade on track

19/4/2009, LFI
An article by L. de la Pasture, published in Farmers Weekly Interactive, details the problems caused by Fusarium mycotoxins, deoxynivalenol and zearalenone, to millers and breakfast cereal manufacturers in the UK and Ireland in 2008, and the initiatives put in place to deal with them. The HGCA Risk Assessment is used to assess the likelihood of further problems with the 2009 harvest.

Missed mycotoxins prompt wheat test ruling, and scrutiny of HGCA risk assessments

30/1/2009, LFI
Higher than usual levels of DON mycotoxins in wheat have prompted millers (National Association of British and Irish Millers) to demand that from 1 February 2009 all human consumption deliveries be accompanied by test results. But the NFU has given the request a cool reception. It is claimed that the higher levels from last year’s harvest have meant that growers’ safety risk self-assessments, using the HGCA method, cannot ensure that grain intakes are below the EU’s 1250ppb legal limit set in September 2006.
